An Obagi Chemical Peel uses a chemical solution in varying strengths in order to improve and smooth facial skin by removing the damaged outer layers of the skin. Perfect for improving the skin quality of people with blemishes, wrinkles and uneven skin pigmentation, it can also be used to remove pre-cancerous skin growths, soften acne scars and even help to control acne.
A chemical peel works by mixing a blue solution with Trichloracetic Acid or TCA. Between one and four applications are commonly preformed, with a medium depth peel being the result. Many times a chemical peel is performed at the same time as a facelift, because a chemical peel cannot prevent or slow down the aging process.
Because there are many different techniques and options when you have a chemical peel performed, it is best to talk with one of our surgeons regarding your particular situation so they can help you to make the best decisions regarding your procedure.
A chemical peel is almost always preformed for cosmetic reasons and can greatly improve your appearance and self-confidence. Because of the nature of chemical peels, your insurance may cover your procedure and you should make sure to check with your insurer before the procedure.
Before the procedure, your surgeon will most likely prescribe a pre-treatment regimen of either Retin-A of AHA. These pre-treatments will thin the skin's outer layer, which will allow the TCA solution to penetrate into your skin deeper and more evenly. In addition, they may also add Hydroquinone to this regimen, especially if you have blotchy skin or pigmentation issues. The pre-treatment phase may last up to a month prior to your chemical peel based on your individual needs.
Because the chemicals in the peel act as an anesthetic, you will not need any further numbing agents during the actual procedure. You may be given a sedative in order to help you stay relaxed during the procedure.
Once your face has been cleaned thoroughly, the TCA solution will be applied to your face. At first you may feel a faint tingling or stinging sensation, but it will fade away very quickly. The solution will remain on your face for no longer than 15 minutes and is then removed. In order to achieve your desired results, additional medium strength peels may need to be preformed, generally over several months. After this, mild peels may be performed as often as once a month.
You may notice moderate swelling and mild discomfort after your chemical peel, which will subside within the first week. Your new skin will be apparent in the first 10 days and should be healed sufficiently for you to return to your normal daily routine. You should also avoid unprotected exposure to the sun.
After your chemical peel, you will notice your skin feeling tighter, lighter in color, smoother and younger-looking.
