Although liposuction is not intended as a weight-loss technique, this procedure is commonly used to remove fatty areas and for body contouring and sculpting. Women who choose to have liposuction often choose to target their abdomen, hips, thighs, and knees. In men, the love handles, lower abdomen and enlarged male breasts are areas that are often targeted.
A good candidate for this procedure is a person of normal weight, with healthy, elastic skin, and who has pockets of extra fat in areas that they would like to have removed. These pockets of fat may not respond to traditional diet or exercise, in which case liposuction becomes a very viable option. Age is not of primary concern, although as you age your skin does lose some degree of elasticity, which means your results may not be identical to a patient with younger, more elastic skin.
During liposuction, your surgeon will insert a cannula - or surgical metal tube - through surgically created entrances in the patient's skin. Fat is then sucked through the cannula into a container by the power of a vacuum pump. The experience and skill of our surgeon allows him to act as body sculptor, leading to more proportional and attractive results.
After the liposuction procedure, you will be fitted with a snug elastic bandage or compression garment to wear over the treated area; allowing your skin to shrink and fit its new contour. Although you will immediately see a noticeable difference in the shape of your body, improvement will become even more apparent after about six weeks as the swelling has subsided.
Setting realistic expectations is a very important part of your surgery, and our plastic surgeon can help you to understand how liposuction may be able to help make your body look more like you want it to. For a consultation with our surgeon, please contact us to set up an appointment.
