What is Breast Surgery?

Breast surgery is a sub-specialty of plastic surgery that involves treatments designed to enhance the size and lift of the breasts. Many women who have experienced changes in their breasts due to aging or pregnancy turn to breast surgery to restore their youthful figure. Similarly, women who feel that their breasts are too small or too large can use breast surgery to achieve the breast size they desire. At the Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Center of Texas, our board-certified plastic surgeons are highly experienced in breast surgery and offer a number of breast surgery treatments to help women achieve their cosmetic goals.

Breast Surgery FAQs

Medical insurance will not cover cosmetic procedures, otherwise known as “elective” procedures, which are not deemed medically necessary. Breast implants are most often used for breast augmentation surgery, which is considered an elective procedure. Therefore, breast implants are typically not covered by medical insurance. However, patients who have received a mastectomy through the course of breast cancer treatment may be eligible to receive coverage for their breast implants.
The recovery from breast implants may vary depending on the exact techniques used during the breast augmentation procedure. Typically, patients can expect an initial recovery period of about one to two weeks. During this time, patients may experience soreness, swelling, changes in sensitivity and bruising in the breasts. Due to these symptoms, we often recommend that patients take time away from work and other activities and rest as much as possible during this period. Patients will need to avoid exercise and other strenuous activities for about 6 weeks, and can expect to make a full recovery within about 8 weeks of their procedure.

At the Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Center of Texas, we offer the following breast surgery procedures:

At the Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Center of Texas, our breast surgeries are performed with general anesthesia, so you will be asleep and fully comfortable for the procedure. However, patients can expect some discomfort during the recovery period. Pain and related symptoms are typically most severe within the first week of recovery, but we will provide a prescription for pain medications to help you through this period. After this point, you can use over-the-counter pain relievers, apply ice to the treatment area, and follow the recovery guidelines to manage your pain and enjoy a more comfortable recovery.
The recovery period following your breast surgery can vary depending on the type of breast surgery performed and the techniques involved. In most cases, patients can expect pain, swelling, bruising and related symptoms. These symptoms will be at their worst for the first week, and will gradually resolve afterwards. For this reason, we encourage patients to take at least one week off from work and other activities, reducing stress on the body and giving it time to heal. Patients can return to these activities within a week or two, but will need to avoid exercise and other strenuous activities for approximately 6 weeks. Most patients will achieve a full recovery within two months of their breast surgery.
